An original oil painting created directly outdoors at beautiful Staithes during a painting trip with fellow ‘Northernboys’ (Artist plein air painting group in the North of England). I stayed for a total of 3 nights and created no less than 13 new works. Staithes is such an inspiring place with possible paintings/composition everywhere you look. I even found myself painting nocturnes in the evening whilst painting friends sketched and painted in the pub.
This particular piece was created rapidly, down on the beck looking into strong winter afternoon light. This has a certain effect on the subject, with elements of the subject becoming obliterated/softened. I also enjoy the sharp contrasts of light and dark as well as the resulting ghostly image.
This subject got me very excited and I can’t wait for the opportunity to tackle similar subjects and lighting conditions.
